The Active Joe
Aging Athletes are Actively Invited and Supported

DV2023_Older_Runner.jpg

Here at The Active Joe, it is important to me to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all athletes, free from unfair discrimination and where you can feel that you are celebrated for being yourself. Details about the 8 Driving Principles that drive how The Active Joe operates are available here...

The Active Joe recognizes that pursuing road and trail racing carries with it some potential obstacles as we age. We want people to be able to be active as they get older, and we don't want those in our sport to disappear as they get older. We think about these things and then actively pursue initiatives that support our older athletes in the sport!

Read on and we highlight which of our 8 Driving Principles are fulfilled by each of these items:

Inclusivity

In 2024, all race documentation will show that trekking poles, which can be a huge help for an older runner's balance, will be not only allowed but encouraged as needed.

Equity Initiatives so Aging Runners Stay Part of our Race Population

We allow pacers for athletes aged 60 and older from the start of the race for our longest ultramarathon races (100K and 100 Miles) at Dinosaur Valley Endurance Run.

Beginning in 2024, all athletes aged 70 and older will be able to have a pacer from the start of the race all the way to the finish in ALL distances at our trail races.

Any races with age groups 60-99 for awards will have those age groups separated into 60-69 and 70+.
