Rough Creek Trail Run Continues in 2016

Updated: Jul 25, 2020

Allen, Texas – The Rough Creek Trail Run will be continuing in its 5th year on September 17th under new ownership. Race production and running outreach company The Active Joe, owned by Libby Jones, has acquired the race from trail race production company Endurance Buzz Adventures, owned by David Hanenburg.

Jones ran the Rough Creek Trail Run in 2015 for the first time and, although taking a nasty fall in the process, thoroughly enjoyed the race. Hanenburg had announced that this would be the final running of the Rough Creek Trail Run so he could focus more on his other event offerings.

The Active Joe currently produces 3 road race events, totaling about 6500 participants each year, and produces one trail race, the Big Cedar Endurance Run. “Big Cedar Endurance Run is all ultramarathon length events, with a 50K, 50 miler, and 100 mile race,” said Jones. “I have been interested for a while in adding an additional trail race that include more distances open to those trying out trail running. After running Rough Creek, the course was such a fun mix of terrain and climbs and the scenery provided by being on the property of the Rough Creek Lodge was beautiful. I thought it was a shame to see the event not continue.”

Jones approached Hanenburg in the fall and asked if there would be a possibility of continuing on such a great race that has clearly been enjoyed by hundreds in the local running community.   “Knowing Libby's passion for the sport and it's community, I knew she would be a great fit to take over one of the most unique trail races in the state,” said Hanenburg. “It's wonderful to see the race continue under a race organization focused on creating a great runner experience.”

“David has established such a solid reputation of well-executed and fun events in North Texas,” said Jones. “I plan to maintain the standards Dave has set in producing this race well going into the future.”

Rough Creek Trail Run will next be held September 17, 2016 on the ruggedly beautiful grounds of the private property of the Rough Creek Lodge in Glen Rose, Texas. The race offers a variety of distances: 10K, half marathon, full marathon, and 40 miler. Registration will open Monday, January 25, at www.RoughCreekTrailRun.com.

The Active Joe was founded in 2008 with the mission of providing running outreach to the local community. The organization produces the Big Cedar Endurance Run 100 Mile, 50 Mile, and 50K (November), the New Years Double (December/January), the Fairview Half Marathon and 5K (April), and The Showdown Half Marathon and 5K (October). All events are located in Dallas, Texas or the suburbs north of Dallas. Owner Libby Jones has been an active member of the leadership of the Dallas-Fort Worth running community for many years and is an avid ultrarunner herself.
